hey,

I haven't logged onto tribe in more than a year, but I guess I used to be the moderator for this. I need to find someone else that wants to do it, so it can be better.

Send me a message if you're interested....as well as the steps I need to take in order to transfer everything.

Thanks.

ZIRK UBU, SAN DIEGO’S NEWEST ARTS CIRCUS, ARRIVES

ZIRK UBU, SAN DIEGO’S NEWEST ARTS CIRCUS, ARRIVES

zirkubu.com
Giant Bohemian Garage Sale, Sunday, February 24, from 3-6 pm, at 2191 Main Street, San Diego 92113

It's still on for Sunday, Feb 24 from 3 - 6 pm
Fans of circus and of performance art have reason to celebrate this February: the arrival of Zirk Ubu, a new addition to San Diego’s underground arts scene. The troupe (whose provocative motto is, “Sublime Mysteries Revealed!”), brings together performers from divergent backgrounds, making Zirk Ubu difficult to categorize according to standard entertainment conventions.

While the talents of some Zirk Ubu cast members lie in circus and sideshow arts — sword-swallowers, aerialists, body-balancers, clowns — others work in expressive idioms drawn from traditional cultures. These performers specialize in storytelling through masks, shadow-puppetry, or movement and dance. Still other cast members present anarchic performance art pieces: surreal vignettes glimpsed in a peep box, or eccentric characters infused with mythological overtones.

A core value of the group is improvisation, whether it be in a modern dance interlude or a comedic give-and-take with the audience. The result, according Zirk Ubu’s mission statement, is “a theater of urban inversion, where the possible and the unimaginable dance together in the night air.”

The tightly-knit cast of twelve met while working together for the Technomania Circus, a long-standing institution in San Diego. They formed Zirk Ubu after splitting with Technomania last Fall, seeking a new creative direction.

“We’re really excited about the alchemical mix of the group,” said veteran performer and Zirk Ubu member Iain Gunn, “there’s a certain magic in the blend of talents and artistry this collaboration brings together.” “We wanted to explore a new, more experimental direction,” added cast member Mary-Margaret Mitchell “and it’s really unleashed some creative mojo for us all.”

Zirk Ubu’s premiere performance this month is entitled “Giant Bohemian Garage Sale,” and it is just that: a sale of cast members’ bizarre costumes, artwork, kitsch and knickknacks, combined with a Zirk Ubu performance. This unholy union of unbridled bedlam and shameless commerce is a fund raiser for the group, which plans to purchase improved props and equipment with the proceeds. The next show is planned for March.

Ever wonder what a mystic sword-swallower sells when he clears out his garage? Ever think what it would be like to comb through the cast-offs of a surly clown and a psychic comic? Well, here’s your chance to find out while enjoying an afternoon of unique artistry and supporting local performers as well.

Zirk Ubu’s Giant Bohemian Garage Sale will be held on Sunday, February 24, from 3-6 pm, at 4611 North Avenue in the University Heights neighborhood of San Diego. A $5 donation is requested for admission to Zirk Ubu’s performance area. Come early for the best bargains and for more Zirk Ubu on stage.

For additional information, or to contact the cast, go to: zirkubu.com

wanted: goth / industrial DJs to headline

some friends of mine and i are trying to expand the SD goth presence into a more hard-hitting, future-oriented vein by opening up a new event. i'll be bringing my own blend of industrial, future-goth and dark breaks to the tables, but we're looking for someone established to headline as we're still trying to break into the circuit and gain cred. anyone ready to throw down, or know of anyone who might want to terrify on the decks?
These clases will be taught in 4-6 week sessions, in which we focus on one dance at a time, learning the basic steps, variations, transitions, and combinations.

Hello.

I play in a local cover band based out of Phoenix called Phat Bastard (www.getphat.com).
We have been together for a few years now.
We really would like to play in some venues out of state, and would look forward to doing so in one of the aforementioned areas, but we don't know anything about any of the clubs, agents, or promoters in those areas.

Anyone with any kind of information at all about one of the areas mentioned above so far as clubs to book in or networking opportunities, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Bruce / lead guitarist / Phat Bastard

Bad things from Utah

Hey all,

I got this post from a friend of mine over on Myspace. Not sure of it's validity, but if it even the slighest bit true...it's pretty screwed up. I felt I should go ahead and pass it on.

Hey Loafie-

Please repost this if you care about basic human rights and feel that this is wrong. This happened in Utah please read below.

Here is the video footage:

homepage.mac.com/apexgrin/...Sharing2.html

Knick of Evol intent puts the night's events into his own words::

Last night, I was booked to play an event about an hour outside of Salt Lake City, Utah. The hype behind this show was huge, they presold 700 tickets and they expected up to 3,000 people total. The promoters did an amazing job with the show.. they even made slipmats with the flyers on them to promote in local shops.

So, we got to the show around 11:15 or so and it was really cool. It was all outdoors, in a valley surrounded by huge mountains. They had an amazing light show flashing on to a mountain behind the site, the sound was booming, the crowd was about 1500 people thick and everything just seemed too good to be true really. Well...

At about 11:30 or so, I was standing behind the stage talking with someone when I noticed a helicopter pulling over one of the mountain tops. I jokingly said "Oh look, here comes big brother" to the person I was with. I wasn't far off.

The helicopter dipped lower and lower and started shining its lights on the crowd. I was kind of in awe and just sat and watched this thing circle us for a minute. As I looked back towards the crowd I saw a guy dressed in camoflauge walking by, toting an assault rifle. At this point, everyone was fully aware of what was going on . A few "troops" rushed the stage and cut the sound off and started yelling that everyone "get the fuck out of here or go to jail". This is where it got really sticky.

No one resisted. That's for sure. They had police dogs raiding the crowd of people and I saw a dog signal out a guy who obviously had some drugs on him. The soldiers attacked the guy (4 of them on 1), and kicked him a few times in the ribs and had their knees in his back and sides. As they were cuffing him, there was about 1000 kids trying to leave in the backdrop, peacefully. Next thing I know, A can of fucking TEAR GAS is launched into the crowd. People are running and screaming at this point. Girls are crying, guys are cussing... bad scene.

Now, this is all I saw with my own eyes, but I heard plenty of other accounts of the night. Now this isnt gossip I heard from some candy raver, these are instances cited straight out of the promoters mouth..

- One of the promoters friends (a very small female) was attacked by one of the police dogs. As she struggled to get away from it, the police tackled her. 3 grown men proceeded to KICK HER IN THE STOMACH.

- The police confiscated 3 video tapes in total. People were trying to document what was happening out there. The police saw one guy filming and ran after him, tackled him and his camera fell, and luckily.. his friend grabbed it and ran and got away. priceless footage. That's not all though. Out of 1,500 people, there's sure to be more footage.

- The police were rounding up the staff of the party and the main promoter went up to them with the permit for the show and said "here, I have the permit." The police then said, "no you don't" and ripped the permit out of his hand. Then, they put an assault rifle to his forehead and said "get the fuck out of here right now."

Now.. let's get the facts straight here.

This event was 100% legal. They had every permit the city told them they needed. They had a 2 MILLION DOLLAR insurance policy for the event. They had liscenced security guards at the gates confiscating any alcohol or drugs found upon entry (yes, they searched every car on the way in). Oh, I suppose I should mention that they arrested all the security guards for possession.

Oh another interesting fact.. the police did not have a warrant. The owner of the land already has a lawsuit against the city for something similar. A few months ago, she rented her land for a party and the police raided that as well. And catch this, the police forced her to LEAVE HER OWN PERSONAL PROPERTY. That's right. They didnt arrest her, but made her leave her own property!!!

Don't get it twisted, this is all going down in probably THE most conservative state in the USA. And this is scary.. a gross violation of our civil liberties. The police wanted this party shut down, so they made it happen. Even though everything about this event was legal. The promoters spent over $ 20,000 on this show and did everything they had to to make it legit, only to have it taken away from them by a group of radical neo-con's with an agenda.

This was one of the scariest things I have ever witnessed in person. I can't even begin to describe how surreal it was. Helicopters, assault rifles, tear gas, camoflauge-wearing soldiers.... why? Was that really necessary?

This needs to be big news across the USofA. At least in our music scene (edm as a whole)... this could happen to any of us at any time. When we're losing the right to gather peacefully, we're also letting the police set a standard of what we can get away with. And I think that's BULLSHIT!

The system fucked up last night... They broke up a party that was 100% legal and they physically hurt a lot of people there at the same time. The promoters already have 6 lawsuits ready to file with their lawyers and the ACLU is already involved.

I'm sure some pictures (and hopefully some video) will surface soon. I'll make sure to post them up here on 404, so you can see the Police State of America at work.

fans of SPUN

GALAXIE PICTURES is currently developing 'Unfiltered', the directorial debut for Creighton Vero, screenwriter of the indie cult hit 'Spun'.

For more information contact: pete@galaxie-pictures.com

SYNOPSIS:

Teenage Sherri, a new arrival to Lake Charles, Louisiana, gets a rude awakening as the locals give her a slice of real Southern hospitality, small town style. Included in her Lake Charles initiation are some hard lessons on friendship, family, and bigotry—not the kind made of ephemeral remarks and incidental ostracizing of outsiders, but real and vicious institutional racism, the kind that ends in murder.

Sherri arrives as the locals prepare for the funeral of Mary, the town’s Contraband Days Celebration Queen. With her death begins the shattering of the perfect picture of southern hospitality that she represents. Grieving is glossed over in favor of panic about the town’s quickly evaporating marijuana supply. What’s really died is the smiling welcoming south, and its warmth and hospitality are quickly replaced by a rapid growth of weeds.

Then the ensemble cast of Unfiltered gradually unwinds into a hard picture of gritty southern life as facades of tolerance gradually peel / crumble away. What’s revealed is the stuff that’s usually swept under the carpet.

I would have to say it was a Fish concert. It was in Florida out on an Indian reservation. There were cops, but people were smoking in front of them and not getting arrested because it was perfectly legal to do so. Anyway, I don't do that stuff any more, but that was the best live band I had ever had the fortunate chance of seeing! It was on mine and my husband's anniversary at that! We go a little drunk that night and I danced off and on until dawn! The sun rise was the awe of awes! God is quite the artist! I'll never forget how fantastic it was to watch such a talented band play for hours!

Anyone got the lowdown on getting things up in local galleries? Or just a comprehensive, up-to-date listing of the galleries in SD? Aside from the high-tech ones in Balboa Park only millionaires get into. I figure if I'm ever going to attempt to showcase in one, I should know where they are located at least, and possibly what requirements are if available. Cafes also welcome (Like Claire de Lune, Lestat's etc).

Thanks!

SPATULAND this FRIDAY 19th

Every First and Third Friday

SPATULAND

After the initial energy consolidation at the Grand Opening, Spatula invites you to an even greater level of Spatula Energy.

@Recognize
4746 El Cajon Blvd
cross street is Euclid
9pm-2am 21+
5$ cover or 2$ with Spatula
full bar and quasi-indoor smoking patio
Featuring ATASH MAYA fire dancers, DJ Liquidgrey, and Special Guest DJ002

DJ Liquidgrey 8-11, ATASH MAYA Fire Dancers at 11pm and guest DJs at midnight!

It will be held at Recognize on 4746 El Cajon Blvd and will be every 1st and 3rd Friday of the month!
SpatuLand the the new Fridays neighbor of Vice/Versa on the 2nd and 4th fridays of the month, making Recognize the focal point of the San Diego Electro music scene on friday nights.

Recognize is a beautifully remodeled bar, nestled in a perfect underground-type spot. The bar is well stocked and there is a quasi-indoor smoking area in the back. Entry is 5$ or 2$ with Spatula (non battle types please)
21+

The concept of SpatuLand is a hope to harness and embody the energy the Spatula directs into its own location. I theorize this could maximize Spatula Energy perpetuation efficiency. For years Spatula has harvested ambient energies contributed by the positive release of activated participants and perpetuated them in the Spatula Energy Continuum (SEC). Several months ago the SEC reached a new plane of energy. I was able to photograph this with a disposable camera which is the image that you see on the SpatuLand flyer. The SEC is a type of matrix where energy put in is combined, perpetuated, and magnified by a synergy effect with other energies. CONSOLIDATING THE SEC INTO ITS OWN LOCATION IS A DELICATE AND HIGHLY VOLATILE PROCEDURE. BUT, if only positive energy is put in, then I KNOW the results will be amazing unlike anything i can conceptualize! Thats why I am also looking for electro music artists, visual performers, and multimedia artists to come together, bringing forward and contributing their positive energies to the continuum, and be activated by the resulting magnified energy.

All are welcome.
96.9 Free Radio San Diego Sat. Halloween Party

Halloween Party / 2 Year Birthday Party!!! - OCT 30th!!

Our Halloween and 2 year birthday party have been confirmed!!! Saturday, October 30th @ 8:00PM at the North Park Deli, we'll be having a hell of a time.

Why at a deli? Well, it's a big deli. It's next door to Shooters, less than 50 yards from Scolaris, they make sandwiches, sell beer, and are going to stay open till 2:00am for us.

Sparky's has always been a great place (for those who don't know, that's normally where we have our parties), but it is a bar, and some of our very own DJs (and plenty of our listeners) can't get in because of the 21+ thing. The North Park Deli on the other hand is huge, has an outside, sells beer, and the owner likes the station. It's a win-win scenario.

So stay tuned for further updates, but this should be a hell of a fun time. Costumes aren't mandatory, but encouraged. Rumor has it there will be a pie throwing booth, where you can toss pies in the faces of your favorite DJ (this includes Bob Ugly and V18).

get on board, Media EmergenC...

Join us October 6th to 9th to confront the emergency that the corporate media has created in this country. By working together we can reinvent the media!

Schedule of Media EmergenC Conference
Wednesday, October 6 – Let’s get this Party Started!

Voz Alta, 1544 Broadway – 7-10 p.m. - Downtown San Diego
Kick off four days of speakers, workshops, discussion, screenings, performers and action with a welcome address by one of our keynote speakers, spoken word performance by Al Howard and Brujas y Bellas and a film screening dealing with the issues surrounding corporate consolidation of the media including films by: Media Arts Center San Diego, Free Press.net, Portland Indymedia and San Diego Indymedia. Robert Bodle from the Media Arts Center of San Diego will give a short talk on identity, representation and people of color in the corporate media. Donations accepted at the door.

Broadway near Front street - 5-7pm - Downtown San Diego
PROTEST THE CONTINUING WAR IN AFGHANISTAN
Three years ago, the US invaded Afghanistan, claiming to bring peace, freedom from terror, and liberation for Afghan women. In 2004, the occupation continues, with hundreds of combat-related civilian deaths this year (more than 100 civilian casualties each month from landmines alone). Thousands of Afghans have been imprisoned and tortured since the US invasion. The countryside is controlled by Taliban and warlords (many supported by the US), and farmers are producing record opium poppy crops as their only means of survival. Women face not only the nationwide increasing poverty and further decline in health care and other services, but also continued lack of education and rights. US soldiers are still being killed and wounded. Organized by the San Diego Coalition for Peace and Justice

Thursday, October 7 – Day of Action

NBC Offices, Broadway and Third Avenue – Downtown San Diego
Thursday night, the NAB will be holding their Marconi Awards ceremony. In response, Media EmergenC will hit the streets to hand out our own awards for corporations that have been particularly effective at stifling the voice of the people this year. March with us from the NBC offices to the Manchester Grand Hyatt for a night of protest, street theater and fun! March will start at NBC offices at 6:30 p.m.

Voz Alta, 1544 Broadway – Downtown San Diego
At 9pm we will be screening The Miami Model at Voz Alta.

Friday, October 8 – Celebration of Independent Voices

Pokez and the Rosary Room, 947 E St - Downtown San Diego
Join Anthony Lappé of Guerrilla News Network, Scarlet Symphony, Los Able Minded Poets and the Mentone Collective to celebrate independent voices in music that are growing stronger every day! We will be screening a number of films from the Guerrilla News Network. $10-20 suggested donation.

Saturday, October 9 – Speakers, Workshops, Media Fair!

World Beat Center, 2100 Park Blvd. – Balboa Park
In the morning, Media EmergenC will focus on the emergency state of media in the United States: A keynote address by Roger Horwitz and panel discussion will touch on problems with current mainstream media and the reasons we are in dire need of change. Following a lunch break, we will reconvene for workshops addressing topics from Public Access TV to How to Read the Corporate Media, from Pirate and Internet Radio Broadcasting to Reporting for Indymedia. All day participants will be able to meet other indy and community media activists, find out about exciting projects and attend book signings and events at the Media Fair adjacent to the World Beat Center.

Films to be screened include: UnConventional TV RNC coverage, Shocking and Awful from Paper Tiger TV, Gadabout Film Festival Films, Alternate Focus, SDIMC RNC Coverage and more!
